Strength training builds muscle, which in turn will help you burn fat. What you can’t do is spot reduce; you cannot pick a spot (your abs), do a zillion crunches and have your abdominal area magically shrink. Muscle burns more calories, which will burn off fat, but you cannot make the fat come off of a certain area of your body. It doesn’t work like that. Your genes will determine where the fat comes off and in what order.

Your best bet is to combine full-body cardio & strength training. That way, you’re burning tons of calories and building muscle, which will help you burn even more calories and make you look great when the fat starts to melt off. I would recommend a workout that goes something like this:

5-10 minutes on the elliptical, low intensity, warm up
20-30 minutes strength training, alternate different parts of the body to target each day
20-30 minutes cardio (elliptical or cardio of your choice)
