Most people picture someone doing crunches on ab exercise balls when they think of how it's used. That's how they do it in all the commercials. They just do regular crunches, and for good reason. You can really focus on your abs using exercise balls. It's perfect for feeling that burn right where you need it. But people often forget about the obliques when they think of ab ball workouts. Just like it's great for the front abs, it's perfect for the obliques, as well.
The obliques are the sides of your abs. It's what gives you that lean, tapered look. Building the sides of your abs also makes your core stronger, which essentially makes your entire body stronger. So don't ever forget your obliques when working your abs, and an ab ball is the perfect tool to target them just right.
When you're lying back on the exercise ball, you're in the perfect position to recline back to work your regular abs. The ab ball works so well at targeting your abs because you can push your lower back against it to really focus on your abdominal muscles. And, just like you crunch up to work your regular abs, you can do the same to work your obliques.
To begin, get in position just like you're about to do your regular crunches on the ab ball. Then, crunch your body to the side. You'll really feel the side of your abs burn. It really concentrates the side of your abs perfectly so that you can develop them more with less effort. You can even twist your elbows side to side, touching your elbows to the alternate knee. For instance, you come up and touch your right elbow to your left knee, etc. This also causes you to really feel the burn early on; something you'd never get doing these types of exercises on the floor.
Another way you can work your obliques using the ab exercise ball is to take your hands and hold them in front of you with the tips of your fingers touching and your palms facing down. Then, slowly push your hands to the left, and then to the right. The twisting motion on the ab ball really works the abs where you want it to and you'll get that six pack in no time.
You can do many ab exercises on the ab ball, and the obliques are often neglected. Yet they are an important part of your core, and are also important for your muscular symmetry. So don't forget to work your obliques the next time you're doing ball workouts by using the techniques above or by coming up with a few of your own.
